Fuerteventura, a walk through history

Fuerteventura, a walk through history

Fuerteventura has the biggest inhabited areas in the tourist areas, but if you decide to go for a walk through the inland of the oldest island of the archipelago and know its cultural aspect, we propose you a visit to the Casa de los Coroneles (Colonel’s House) in La Oliva municipality, a characteristic and historic XVIII century monument of the island.

Miguel de Unamuno, and his exile on this beautiful island in 1924, still goes through the intellectual veins of this island. It was Unamuno who made popular the colours and tastes of the sea that borders the island. For him, Fuerteventura was like an oasis in the civilisation desert. Nowadays in Puerto del Rosario (the island’s main city) you can visit the house where this emblematic writer lived, which became a museum.

Another interesting option is Los Molinos Interpretation Centre, in Tuineje, where the story of the traditional windmills is told. Those windmills produced the so-called “gofio”, a kind of cereal roasting flour, which was the key for the survival of the archipelago inhabitants for centuries. It is also interesting to visit the “museo de la sal” (salt museum) facilities situated in Salinas del Carmen, where knowing the manufacturing process of this precious condiment will surprise you.
